the day we became official @ Citi Field

The first Mets game of the 2020 MLB short shit show of a season was last week, and Tom & I watched it at The Clubhouse while we were in The Hamptons. It was the first Mets ANYTHING this year since The Great Canceller (a.k.a. COVID-19) made away with all the things, but it made me think of the first Mets experience I had last year…it was our fifth date, and THE DAY WE BECAME OFFICIAL.

I has slept over the night before and woke up this Saturday morning, April 6th, 2019 - in Tom’s bed - like a kid on Christmas morning! By now, we had been texting up a storm, gone on two dinner dates, had a date at my place and date at his place, and now for our 5th date, we were attending a Mets game at Citi Field.

It was also the first day I’d be meeting a small group of his friends (who I would come to know well and love). We got dressed - he lent me one of his Mets jerseys and hats, and we picked up bagel sandwiches.

We drove to Citi Field, found a parking spot and set up for the tailgate. We deleted the Hinge app (where we met) off of our phones while eating breakfast. “If we make it to five dates,” Tom had said, then we delete the app.” We did, and waited for the other to arrive.

The others showed up little by little, and I liked them all right away. There was JT, JT’s mom Dorothy and dad Tommy, Troy and Jill, Vito and Gel… Gel (short for Angelica) and I hit it off instantly. I have never made a friend in my life as fast as I made friends with Gel that day. It was good vibes all around - drinking Stellas, smoking cigars, visiting the port-a-potty, feeling tipsy and so in love with little Thomas Rowinski from my elementary school (life, man, it’s funny) - all leading up to entering the stadium to watch the game.

We sat in our seats and watched the game a little, but I don’t remember much. I feeling rather nice from the several beers I drank in the parking lot. At one point, Rowinski suggested getting Shake Shack which I vehemently agreed with. While on the line to get our burgers, I saw his eyes fixed on me for a while and then he said You’re my favorite person.” I could not have been any more high than I was at that moment, or so I thought…

After getting the food, we walked some ways across the Shea Bridge to meet up with Vito and Gel. Once we crossed the other side Tom swung around to me and asked “Should we make this official?” I agreed that we should, said ‘YES’, and he turned to Gel saying You just witnessed history.”

Tom, me, Gel, and Vito took the photo below right after.

We watched the rest of the game and hung out. A few of the guys came back to Tom’s place to continue being boys, so Tom , JT, and I stopped at the market to pick up some drinks for them. Tom called me ‘Jenny from the Block’ as we were leaving the store. It’s funny what I remember. // Some video snippets from this day can be seen at the beginning of the short video I made celebrating our 1-year anniversary.

I also gave him this card to commemorate a whole year as boyfriend & girlfriend. After reading this post, you should be able to get all the references. [wink, wink]
